Hi, I'm Phylicia!
Some people may have seen me travel around the country or on Broadway with The Lion King. Some may have seen me this past year as "Young Celie" in The Color Purple musical adaptation. Some may know my work on the musical television series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, and some may have seen me hanging with Oprah on The Jennifer Hudson show. But the best way to identify me, is most likely listening for that random voice in Target singing "Defying Gravity." No matter where I go or what I do, I am a theatre kid at heart. And reflecting on my journey, I see all the ways theatre shaped me into who I am. And I see all the ways it led to devastating heartbreaks. Until I decided to stop seeing it that way. My career and truly, my life, opened up when I decided to shift my mindset and see theatre as a vessel, as a tool, as a way to share my talent and love of playing pretend with the world.
I think back to the girl in college, not being cast in shows, and if I knew what I know now, it would have saved me many nights of tears, of self-doubt, and leaving my program for a semester. It's this knowledge I want to share with theatre students looking to make this their career in some way. I want to guide them and empower them to a place where they recognize this art form works FOR them and they are the master of their fate and captain of their career. So I created "Be Your Own Yes" as the answer to what I was seeking in college and found right as I was out the door. (The proof is I booked The Lion King right before graduation.) And I would love to not only share my knowledge with your students, but hear from them, listen to their struggles and limiting beliefs and come up with unique ways to combat them.
